Comics and graphic novels pose a unique challenge for editors and translators. Every speech bubble is critical, both for revealing a character's personality as well as keeping the pace of the story flowing. And unlike regular prose, you also have to factor in the space restrictions of the bubbles and captions themselves.
But having worked on over 300 published books, I know exactly how to keep things concise so that everything fits perfectly, while ensuring that your dialogue feels sharp and natural.
I also pay close attention to the relationship between text and artwork to make sure that no subtle wordplay is lost in translation, offering creative solutions whenever cultural references need to be localised.
Sports and leisure
Sports writing requires energy, passion and authenticity. Fiction or non-fiction, the language needs to be full of excitement while keeping the terminology accurate.
Whether it’s football, tennis, or even chess, the text should capture the tension of a match, the roar of a crowd, or the raw drama of a last-second winner. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, I know how to strike the right balance: authentic terminology for die-hard fans without drowning newcomers in jargon. And always with language that keeps you on the edge of your seat. After all, a drab piece of sports writing is like a football match with no goals – and nobody wants to sit through a bore draw.
Comedy and humour
Comedy is all about timing, rhythm and voice – nothing falls flatter than a badly told joke. Literal translation kills wordplay, while clumsy editing can ruin the pacing. My job is to make sure that never happens.
With over 12 years of experience translating, editing and writing comedy, I have a keen sense for witty wordplay, side-splitting punchlines and clever phrasing that has readers smiling for the right reasons.
